What are Search Engines?

Search engines are tools whose sole purpose is to find relevant data as it pertains to what you're looking for. Search engines, like bing, Yahoo!, or Google scour the internet to sift through billions of pages in the internet. These services typically present the end user (searcher) with a list of "possible matches."

You might ask, "how do search engines work?" How do I make money leveraging search engine traffic and search engine optimization?

Let us fill you in - in the next few concise pages. If you'd like a more personalized walk-through, please contact our sales team.

There are many answers, but it starts with algorithms. Search engines are incredibly smart - and look through your content (text, images, code), and add your site's information to their database. The search engine also analyzes things like "bounce rate," "keyword density," and many other relevant items to assess where your site should rank in the scheme of things.

  • Bounce rate: A bounce occurs when a web site visitor only views a single page on a website, that is, the visitor leaves a site without visiting any other pages.
  • Keyword density: is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page compared to the total number of words on the page.

We typically target what we term as "The Big Three;" being Google, Yahoo, and bing (Microsoft, MSN, etc.). Ask and AOL are still players, but on a much lower level. The key is to target the biggest search engines, and the smaller two will typically follow suit.
